| TERM: One year as President;
second year as Immediate Past President
PURPOSE: To provide the vision, structure, leadership, environment,
and communication systems for Board members to serve effectively
in their roles.
SUPERVISES: Current Board members and, with VP of Finance &
Operations, the member services provider
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide encouragement, support, resources, feedback to individual
Board members, especially President-Elect.
- Oversee annually the process for validating vision and mission
and goal setting.
- Establish and maintain effective processes and communication
to enable the board to serve members effectively.
- Assure all board and business operations function effectively
to understand member needs and deliver superior service, and assure
ASTD Chapter Operation Requirements are met.
- Review the progress of goals, strategies, and projects at monthly
Board meetings.
- Oversee the sound financial status of the chapter by approving
annual chapter budget prior to transition to a new board, review
contracts with major chapter service providers at beginning of
term, and monitor budget reports on a monthly basis.
- Lead effective transition to a new board annually, including
creation of "Board Members Director's Manual."
- Lead monthly Board and chapter meetings; participate in other
chapter events/committee meetings as available.
- Lead board and chapter members in affiliating, collaborating
and using regional and national resources, including: Chapter
member companies, Bay Area chapters, the ASTD Western Area Manager,
ASTD National Advisors for Chapters, and ASTD National. These
in an effort to better serve members.
- Represent chapter professionally and ethically in all business
functions/organizational activities.
- Attend and participate in all monthly Board meetings and chapter
programs. Participate in other chapter events, committee meetings
and conferences as available.
- Represent chapter professionally and ethically in all business

- Recruit and train President-Elect.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Directly involved in the Training and Development field with
broad knowledge of local resources; minimum 5 years experience
desired.
- Demonstrated experience in budget design and accountability
desired.
- Ability to build, create an environment for motivations, and
lead a team of volunteers.
- Ability to plan, organize, and evaluate chapter activities.
- Demonstrated skills in effective leadership, diplomacy, personal
interaction, problem-solving meeting management and communication.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects.
- National member of ASTD and a member in good standing of the
Silicon Valley chapter.
- Time available to fully participate in chapter and board meetings,
and represent the chapter regionally and nationally
REALISTIC ESTIMATE OF TIME THIS FUNCTION WILL TAKE EACH MONTH:
- Attending Board Meetings: 2 hours plus travel time
- Communicating with Vice Presidents: 40 hours
- Attending monthly chapter meetings: 3 hours plus travel time
- Communicating with administrative office about routine issues:
2-4 hours
